< Perch for the soul >
My soul burns With the desire to become a thread Strong enough To connect Earth to Heaven - Masahisa Goi Joy and gratitude are always my motivation, the keys to my blissful heaven. Great or small, I take every joyous aspect of life to heart, and release it through my work, translating the intangible sounds of fragrances, music, light, strength of beauty and delight that overflow in my heart. The birdcage series grew out of my corrugated cardboard series. I wanted to embody my delight in birdcages in 3-D, since I've always been inspired by their different shapes, lines, silhouettes, and the tacit rich imagination they imply...closed yet open, and full of music and life. Working with foam sheets enabled me to create the kinds of lines and shapes I wanted, and the pliable softness and lightness of the material creates an unexpected contrast against the hard iron-like appearance. Birdcages are like windchimes to me. With a basis in rich eastern heritage, embraced by the fabulous Western sensibility, I wanted to create soft, comfortable perches with style, flair, imagination, and most of all, with a sense of complete freedom...this is why I leave the cage doors open on every piece, letting the birds come and go as they please. You may never see any birds in my cages, as I imagine them to be like fairies, coming and going when no one is looking, but I hope you'll feel their joy, their songs of freedom, and the sense of enriched peace in each and every perch I have created.
